it was high time!
although i always wear a beard, i hate it if it gets too long. since i let it grow for 40 days, it was definitely too long now. i made an appointment with sarah at the hairdressers, she's the only one there, who can trim beards.
when i sat there i asked if she wanted to hear the story that led to the beard (i thought of asking her, if she wanted to be the last supporter and take something off the price). and if i could take before and after pictures with her on my side. 'it's not allowed to take pictures in the salon' came a voice from behind. well, that was that. i told the story anyway.
it's interesting how differently people react to my story (the one: hi, i'm on a cycling trip from vienna to london without using any money...). i noticed that on the trip and remembered it when i read the reactions to the presse article online. that might be relevant to the situation of refugees, too.
some people, i think, don't care for the story. some of them don't listen, others don't know what it means. most of them just mind their own business, others can do what they want. it's not predictable how they will react- friendly or not. and after telling them the background of it all they often start to be interested.
then there are some who immediately think 'why the he'll is someone doing something like that?'. practically all of them reacted positively. as soon as they started to think about it, the only answer seemed to be 'he must have a good reason.'
others felt like 'leave me alone with that crab. got my own problems.' and as i came around really desolate areas, i could understand that. though it doesn't take into account that only action can change that situation (but mostly it didn't come to mention solidarity).
and at last there are a few people, probably the loudest, who at once think 'ha, there's another one, who wants to take a holiday with my money'. not that i care too much about this opinion, but it amazes me. what sort of holiday would that be, riding a bike over 2000 km from here to there without money. did they dream of that for a long time? but i think misunderstandings like that can be eliminated by communicating, which is also really important in the problematic situation of refugees, beggars, minorities and last but not least, greek people in crises.
